Pick the kind of beach you want
Pondicherry has a lively seafront promenade in town and quieter beaches a short drive away. The promenade suits a walk, a coffee and people-watching. Quieter beaches suit a swim-free sit-down, a book and a long view.
Decide before you set out, since the two feel very different.
The promenade in the morning
The seafront is at its best near sunrise, when the air is cool and joggers and walkers fill the path. The sea here is rough and not suited to swimming, so enjoy it from the rocks and the promenade.
Check any traffic or closure notices for the stretch you want. Early morning is quiet and photogenic, and by mid-morning the heat builds.
Paradise Beach and boat access
Paradise Beach is reached by a short boat ride from a nearby jetty. Check ticket prices, boat timings and current access with the operator on the day. Sea conditions and tide can change what is open.
Pack light, carry water and a hat, and keep your valuables dry. Follow staff instructions at the jetty.
Check the sea and the signs
Many beaches along this coast have strong currents. Obey flags, lifeguard advice and signs, and avoid swimming where it is not allowed. Never go into rough water alone.
If the conditions are poor, choose a walk, a cafe or a short drive instead. The beach will still be there tomorrow.
Time your day
Early morning and late afternoon are the best hours for light and comfort. Midday can be hot and glaring. Plan a rest in the middle of the day, ideally with a cool drink in the shade.
Check sunrise and sunset times, and add a buffer for travel. Evening roads can be busy.
Leave nothing behind
Beaches here are shared with fishing families and local residents. Carry your rubbish back, keep voices low near houses and ask before photographing people.
A calm, tidy visit is a good way to enjoy the coast and leave it as you found it.
Use the boat ride well
The boat ride to Paradise Beach is short, but sea conditions can change the schedule. Arrive early in the day, when the water is calmer, and ask when the last boat returns so that you are not stranded.
Wear sandals that can get wet, and carry a dry bag for your phone and wallet. Follow the boatman's instructions when boarding and landing.
Pair the beach with a town stop
Beaches here pair well with a visit to the French Quarter or a bakery stop. A morning at the sea and an afternoon in the shaded streets makes a balanced day.
Choose a cafe with a fan or air conditioning for the hottest hours. Check the closing time of any place you want to visit later in the afternoon.
A calm way to end the day
Return to town in the late afternoon, when the light is soft and the promenade starts filling with people. A simple evening of dinner and a slow walk makes a good close to a beach day.
Keep your plan light, and avoid late sea travel. If you are tired, a rest in the hotel is a perfectly good choice.
What to carry for a beach morning
Pack a light cover-up, sandals, sunscreen, a hat, water and a small towel. Phone signal can be patchy at quieter beaches, so save your map and your hotel details before you go.
A reusable bag helps you carry rubbish back. Keep cash or a working QR payment for small stalls and boat fees, and check prices before you board.
