Dress for the climate
Goa is warm and humid for much of the year, so light, breathable clothes are popular. Linen, cotton and loose weaves make sense, and many shops sell beachwear, sarongs and sandals.
Decide what you will actually wear before you shop.
Where you will find it
Beach-town boutiques, flea markets and local shops all sell clothes. Quality and prices vary a lot. Some pieces are made locally, others come from elsewhere in India, and some are mass-produced.
Ask where an item is made, and trust a plain answer.
Judge the fabric
Feel the cloth, check how it hangs and look at the weave in daylight. Natural fabrics usually feel softer. Check the seams, the stitching and the buttons.
A quick tug on a seam tells you a lot.
Check the fit
Try items on if you can. Light fabrics can shrink, so ask about care and washing. Check sizes against your own measurements, not just the label.
If alterations are offered, ask how long they take.
Understand the price
Prices vary by shop, season and negotiation. Look at a few places before you buy, and ask for the final price including any tax. Bargaining is common in markets, less so in fixed-price boutiques.
Be polite and ready to walk away.
Look for small makers
Some boutiques and stalls feature small makers who print, dye or sew locally. Ask about the process, the fabric and the care. A good maker enjoys explaining the work.
Buying from small makers can be rewarding, but check quality as you would anywhere.
Beach and sun care
Beachwear and sun gear should be practical. A wide-brim hat, sunscreen, a light cover-up and sturdy sandals are worth buying. Keep fabrics out of salt water until you know how they behave.
Rinse swimwear in fresh water after use.
Packing it home
Light clothes fold small, but check the laundry instructions and pack delicate items carefully. Keep receipts for larger purchases.
Check airline baggage rules before you buy a lot.
Shop slowly
Markets in Goa can be warm and crowded. Go early in the day or late afternoon, and take breaks. Do not buy on the first visit unless you are sure.
A second look often shows what you really like.
A sample browse
Start at a market early, before the heat builds. Look at a few stalls without buying and note what you like. Return to the two or three best, compare fabric and price and buy only what you will wear.
A quick walk first saves second thoughts later.
Caring for what you buy
Wash light fabrics gently, dry them in shade and iron on a low setting. Test dyed items for colour run before washing them with other clothes. Follow the care label.
Good care makes cheap pieces last longer.
Respect and modesty
Goa is relaxed about beachwear, but villages, churches and temples expect more modest dress. Carry a light shirt or wrap for when you leave the beach. A little care shows respect and avoids unwanted attention.
Check local signs and follow them.
