Plan before you travel
Ask your home bank about foreign ATM fees, daily limits and whether your card works abroad. Tell the bank your travel dates so it does not block the card. Carry a second card in a different place in case one is lost or blocked.
Write down your bank's international phone number. You may need it if a card is swallowed or a charge looks wrong.
Choose a machine with care
Use ATMs attached to bank branches, airports or big hotels where you can. They are better lit and easier to get help from. Avoid machines in dark corners or with anything stuck to the card slot.
Check that the screen is working and the keypad looks normal. If something looks odd, walk away.
Know what you may be charged
Your home bank may charge a foreign transaction fee, and the ATM operator may charge its own fee. The Reserve Bank of India sets rules on ATM interchange and customer charges, but the amount you pay depends on your bank and the machine.
The screen usually shows any fee before you confirm. Read it before you press the button.
Be careful with currency conversion
Some machines offer to convert the amount into your home currency. This is often called dynamic currency conversion, and it can cost more. Many travellers choose the rupee option and let their bank do the conversion.
Compare the two figures on the screen if you are unsure, and take the one you understand.
Think about limits
ATMs set a limit on each withdrawal, and your card may have a daily limit too. If you need more cash, you may need two withdrawals, which may mean two fees.
Plan your cash needs, and withdraw when you are in a bigger city. Do not carry large sums at once.
If the machine fails
If the machine does not give cash but your account is charged, keep the receipt and note the time and ATM location. Contact the bank that owns the ATM and your home bank as soon as you can.
Refunds can take time. A calm, documented report gets the quickest response.
Protect yourself
Cover the keypad when you enter your PIN and do not accept help from strangers. Decline offers to use a machine for you. Check your account for strange charges after your trip.
Treat cash like a tool for specific days. A little planning avoids trouble.
Timing your withdrawals
Cities tend to have more machines, and these are better stocked. Before a long train ride or a trip to a smaller town, withdraw what you expect to need. Machines in rural areas can run out of cash or be out of service.
Weekends and festival days can leave ATMs empty, so do not leave it to the last minute.
Notes and denominations
Machines usually give notes in a few common values. Large notes can be hard to change at small shops. If you can, break big notes at a hotel, bank or large store and keep smaller ones for the street.
A bundle of small notes makes tea, snacks and tips easy.
Keep a record
Keep every receipt and take a photo of it. Check your banking app a day later to match each withdrawal with a charge. If something does not match, contact your bank early.
A clear record makes any dispute quicker.
