Why think about it
A trip to India can include long journeys, new food, heat and busy roads. Medical care is available in cities, but costs and standards vary. Insurance can help with unexpected bills and disruptions.
This guide is general information, not advice on a specific product. Read the policy documents before you buy.
Medical cover
Check what the policy covers for illness, injury and hospital stays. Look at the limit per claim and whether the hospital must be on a list. Ask whether you pay first and claim later, or whether the insurer pays the hospital directly.
Check any exclusions, such as existing conditions, adventure activities and travel against government advice.
Emergency evacuation
If you are far from a major hospital, evacuation can be costly. Ask whether the policy covers transport to a better hospital or home, and who decides when it is needed.
Look for a 24-hour assistance number and keep it saved on your phone and written on paper.
Trip cancellation and delay
Check what the policy pays if flights are cancelled, bags are lost or you have to cancel your trip. Note the conditions, such as proof, time limits and covered reasons.
Weather and strikes can cause delays, so read how the policy treats them.
Activities and exclusions
Treks, rafting, scuba and motorbike riding are often treated differently from ordinary sightseeing. If you plan any of these, check that they are covered and what conditions apply.
Be honest when you buy. Not stating a condition or activity can lead to a claim being refused.
Keep your documents ready
Save your policy number, assistance phone number and a copy of the policy on your phone. Keep receipts, medical reports and police reports if something happens.
Tell the insurer as soon as you can, and follow their steps for claims.
Compare calmly
Compare a few options from licensed insurers, and check the regulator's guidance if you are unsure. A cheaper policy may leave out cover you want. The best choice is the one you understand.
Buy before you travel, read the terms and keep your documents safe.
Read the fine print
Look for the policy wording, not only the summary page. Check the definitions of medical emergency, pre-existing condition and hospital. Note waiting periods, deductibles and claim deadlines.
If anything is unclear, ask the insurer in writing before you buy.
Before you go
Save your policy, the assistance number and your insurer's claim steps. Note your hotel address and the nearest hospital in each city. Tell a family member where to find your documents.
Check that your passport name matches the name on the policy.
If something goes wrong
Contact the assistance number first, and then follow the insurer's directions. Keep every receipt and report. Ask for written confirmation of what has been approved.
A clear, early report saves time later.
