What it is

UPI One World is a prepaid wallet linked to UPI, designed by the National Payments Corporation of India for inbound travellers. According to NPCI, it lets foreign visitors pay at UPI merchants without needing an Indian SIM card or an Indian bank account.

It is a wallet you load with money, not a bank account. You pay by scanning the same QR codes that people in India use.

How it works in outline

A traveller signs up through a participating provider and completes identity checks, typically with a passport and visa. They load the wallet with rupees and can then scan UPI QR codes at merchants. NPCI says unused balance can be transferred back to the original payment source.

The exact steps, fees and limits depend on the provider and may change. Check them on the provider's official page before you travel.

Who it is for

NPCI first announced the service for travellers from G20 countries and later said it was being extended to inbound travellers more widely. The rules and the list of countries have changed over time.

Eligibility can differ by provider. Confirm that your passport and country are accepted before you rely on it.

Where you can use it

The wallet is meant for merchant payments at UPI-enabled shops, restaurants and services. It is not meant for sending money to friends, and some merchants may not accept it.

Keep a backup card and some cash. Small towns and some stalls may still prefer cash.

Safety and privacy

Download the app only from official app stores and the provider's official links. Keep your passcode private and do not share one-time codes. Check the merchant's name on the payment screen before you confirm.

If a message asks you to pay a fee to unlock your wallet, treat it as a scam and contact the provider directly.

Should you use it?

If you like paying by QR and plan to spend a good amount in rupees, it may be handy. If you only need a few snacks and rides, cash and a card may be easier. There is no need to decide before you arrive.

This guide explains what NPCI has announced. It is not financial advice. Check the official terms before you sign up.

Questions to ask before you sign up

Which countries and passports are accepted? What identity checks are needed and how long do they take? What are the loading limits, fees and expiry rules? How do I get unused balance back, and how long does it take?

Write down the answers. If a provider cannot answer clearly, look at another one or choose a different payment method.

A realistic day with a wallet

You wake up, check your balance and spend the day paying at cafes, shops and rides that show a UPI QR. When a place has no QR, you use cash or a card. At night you check the transaction list to make sure every charge looks right.

It works best as one tool among several.

A ZikPe note

Check ZikPe's official product information, eligibility and current terms before relying on it for a trip. Keep another payment method available and confirm that the merchant accepts the method you intend to use.
