UPI for tourists in India: what to check before choosing ZikPe

Where ZikPe fits

ZikPe's website presents a digital wallet for visitors with identity verification, card top-ups and merchant UPI QR payments. If local QR payments are the gap in your trip, the ZikPe app is a place to check the tourist-wallet route. It is not a guarantee that every traveller, card or payment will be supported.

Before relying on it, confirm your passport and visa eligibility, phone-number support, accepted funding cards, fees, payment limits and unused-balance refund terms in the current app. Keep a working card and some cash as backup. A declined forex card is not automatically fixed by loading a wallet; ask your issuer or use official support.

A QR code is only the beginning

You will see UPI QR codes at many Indian businesses. Being able to scan one is not the same as having a payment account that can use it. An ordinary bank-linked UPI account and a prepaid tourist wallet are different routes. Choose the route you are actually eligible for, rather than downloading an app and assuming it will work.

How the tourist-wallet route works

NPCI describes UPI One World as a wallet for inbound international travellers. The published rollout uses authorised prepaid-payment issuers, identity verification based on a passport and valid visa, and merchant QR payments. Participating issuers, accepted documents and country restrictions matter. Do not assume the service is available to every passport holder or that every issuer offers the same onboarding.

Before you choose a wallet

Ask which nationalities and documents are supported, whether your phone number is accepted, which cards can fund the wallet, and what the total load cost is. Check payment limits, refund rules and how unused money is returned. A programme-wide announcement is not a promise about one app. Limits in an event-specific pilot are not automatically the limits for your trip.

Keep a second way to pay

Carry a working card and a modest cash reserve. Connectivity, verification and merchant acceptance can interrupt a payment. Make a small first payment after activation, keep its receipt and check the transaction in the app.
