A meaningful occasion, not a buying deadline

Akshaya Tritiya is associated with auspicious beginnings, generosity and prosperity. Buying gold is one way many families mark it, but the festival is broader than a jewellery sale. A traveller can appreciate the occasion without feeling obliged to make an expensive purchase.

If you do want a piece, decide your budget and purpose before entering a busy shop. A wearable keepsake, a gift and a gold coin are different choices. Start with the one that matters to you, rather than letting the festival atmosphere decide the amount.

Separate the gold from the total

Ask for the purity, net gold weight, making charges, taxes and any stone charges to be shown separately. A large-looking piece can include stones or other material; its size alone does not explain its gold content. Compare like with like and request a written invoice that describes the item.

For hallmarked gold jewellery, look for the hallmark, purity mark and six-character HUID identifier. Verify the identifier through the official hallmark-checking service rather than treating a seller's reassurance as the whole check. A hallmark is about the stated purity, not a promise that the design or price is right for you.

Think beyond the shop counter

Ask about return, exchange and buyback terms before payment. These are separate policies, and a traveller leaving the city soon may have fewer practical options for using them. Keep the invoice and photograph the item for your own records.

Before taking jewellery abroad, read the customs and import rules that apply to your destination and travel circumstances. Carry valuable pieces securely. A good souvenir should still feel like a considered choice after the festival excitement has passed, not a purchase you have to unravel at the airport.
