Choose a walk with its own purpose

Mehrauli’s archaeological park offers a different way to look at Delhi’s history from a single monument visit. Its paths and surviving structures can reward a slower walk, but they should not be treated as a quick add-on that automatically shares every Qutub visitor arrangement.

Begin with the park itself and check the current access. A nearby landmark helps orient the area, not settle the entrance, ticket or route for another site. Leave enough time to move between them if both are part of the day.

Look at several layers, not one story

Quli Khan’s tomb and the later Dilkusha retreat provide a particularly useful contrast. Thomas Metcalf adapted older structures for a nineteenth-century retreat, with additions including guest accommodation and a boathouse setting. Look for the relationship between the older masonry and later use, instead of reading every structure as part of one original plan.

Read available site information and keep uncertain details uncertain. A ruin’s appearance is not proof of its age or original use. You can appreciate masonry and the relationship between structures without assigning an invented history to every wall.

Restoration can change the route

Delhi’s tourism information describes conservation and reuse work at park structures, including Quli Khan’s tomb setting and later additions. That makes current access worth checking, especially when an old walking map suggests a complete route.

Follow barriers and do not enter an unstable-looking or restricted structure. A photograph of a restored room is not proof it is open today. Conservation work is a reason to adapt the walk, not find another way into the closed space.

Use the paths responsibly

Wear suitable footwear and plan around heat, rain and the distance you want to cover. A park label should not be read as a promise of a smooth, fully shaded or step-free route. Ask about specific access needs before going.

Do not climb walls, enter water structures or move into planted or private areas to improve a photograph. Stay aware of the route back and choose a walking window that leaves enough daylight and transport time.

Let a smaller route be enough

Choose a few clearly accessible features rather than trying to locate every monument named online. A map can make a large area sound like a small collection, while the actual walk has its own pace and conditions.

Keep the Qutub visit and any meal as separate arrangements. Mehrauli Archaeological Park is useful when the walk itself interests you, not only as a way to lengthen an itinerary. A focused route can leave a clearer impression than an ambitious loop rushed to its last stop.
