The colour is a beginning
An off-white cloth with a golden border is a familiar Kerala textile image, but it does not establish how an individual piece was made. In Kochi, begin a saree search with the use: a celebration, everyday wear, a gift or a keepsake you intend to wear after the trip.
Decide whether you want a saree or a set mundu, and ask the seller to show the difference if you are unfamiliar with the garments. They should not become interchangeable names because the display uses a similar palette. A purchase becomes easier when you know what form of cloth you are choosing.
Weaving names describe places beyond Kochi
Balaramapuram and Kuthampully are important names in Kerala's handloom traditions. They are not neighbourhoods to add to a short Kochi shopping walk. A piece associated with one of those places may be sold in the city, but the place of purchase and place of production are different facts.
Ask the shop what it can document about a particular piece. A recognised regional tradition is useful context, not a certificate for every product carrying its name. If provenance is the reason for paying more, keep it as a question until the answer is supported.
Hantex is one place to begin researching
Hantex is Kerala's handloom cooperative network and a useful starting point for learning about handloom products. Check its current outlet details before going, rather than assuming a store address from an older article is still the right destination. Confirm whether the outlet stocks the type of garment you want.
An established network does not remove the need to inspect the actual cloth. Ask about fibre, dimensions, weaving method and the border material. The term kasavu should start a conversation about the particular border, not end it with an assumption about its composition.
Open the cloth and look at the details
Ask to see the body, border and end together. Look at the reverse, edges and any loose threads or marks. The drape and weight matter for wearing the piece; an attractive fold on a counter does not tell you how comfortable it will be for the recipient.
Confirm whether a blouse piece, finishing or additional stitching is included. Ask about washing, storage and colour transfer, and retain those instructions with a gift. Do not use destructive tests or an improvised authenticity trick on merchandise. Written details and a seller willing to explain are more useful.
Take home the piece you chose
Before payment, settle the total and exchange conditions, including whether finishing changes those terms. If work must be completed before you leave Kochi, agree its scope and collection date clearly. A travel deadline is part of the purchase, not a detail to mention after the cloth has been cut.
Inspect the item being packed and keep the bill. A modest, well-understood textile can be the right result. Kerala's weaving traditions deserve more attention than a quick photograph of a golden border, and the wearer deserves a piece chosen for them rather than for the display.
