Design or discovery?
At an independent studio, the interest may be fabric, cut and the person making the piece. At a second-hand market, it may be an unusual object whose history is uncertain. Plan these as two distinct stops rather than a list of interchangeable boutiques. That leaves time to ask questions instead of buying something merely because you have spent an afternoon looking.
Kala Ghoda: investigate Obataimu
Obataimu is an independent-design lead in Kala Ghoda. Its own website remains online; a detailed Lampoon profile describes the label and studio's hand-dyed clothing and small-scale production. The profile places it on S. Bharucha Marg in the Fort area. That reporting is background, not a live stock list or a guarantee of walk-in access. Contact the studio before going, especially if you need a particular size, an appointment or something ready to take home.
Ask beyond the label
Try a garment for movement as well as appearance. Ask about fibre content, washing, alterations and whether the display piece is the one you will receive. If something is made to order, agree on the completion date, deposit terms and delivery before committing. A short visit is a poor fit for an uncertain alteration schedule. A new independent garment is not vintage simply because it looks nostalgic.
Chor Bazaar: inspect the object
Mumbai City's government tourism page identifies Chor Bazaar with clocks, wooden furnishings and paintings. This is the more suitable direction for an old-object browse rather than a new clothing collection. An item can be used, repaired, reproduced or genuinely old. Inspect joins, missing parts and repairs. For electrical objects, ask for a safe demonstration rather than assuming a working plug makes the entire item sound.
Buy for the journey home
Ask about condition and packing even for a small purchase. Do not assume a seller's bill makes an antiquity lawful to export: India restricts unauthorised antiquities exports. Leave an object behind if its age or legal status cannot be established. Stock, trader locations and studio access change, so check the specific destination on the day. Keep the two shopping areas as separate outings if travelling between them would make the day rushed.
