Three places, three moods
Delhi has three UNESCO World Heritage sites: Humayun's Tomb, the Qutb complex and the Red Fort complex. Each belongs to a different era and feels different on the ground. You do not need to see them all in one day.
Pick one or two, and give each enough time. Check which days and hours each one is open.
Humayun's Tomb
This garden tomb is often called a forerunner of later Mughal architecture. The setting is calm, with long paths, water channels and red sandstone against white marble.
Go in the morning or late afternoon for softer light. Tickets are usually sold at the gate, with different rates for Indian and foreign visitors, so check the current price.
Qutb Minar and its neighbours
The Qutb complex includes a tall minaret, an iron pillar and ruined arches from early Delhi. Take time to look at the carved stone, since the details are worth slowing down for.
Mind your steps on uneven ground, and check which parts of the complex are open to visitors on the day.
The Red Fort
The Red Fort is a large complex that was once a Mughal capital. It is busy and open-air, so allow time and carry water. Security checks are standard.
Check the current opening days and what is open inside, because some museums and areas close on certain days.
Plan the logistics
Distances in Delhi are long, and traffic can be heavy. Metro, cab or a hired car all work. Plan one site per outing, with a break for lunch.
Dress modestly and wear comfortable shoes. Carry a small bag, since larger bags may be restricted at some entrances.
Look closely, not widely
The joy of these places is in the details: a carved window, a pattern on a dome, the way light falls across a courtyard. A guide or audio guide can help, if you want background.
Take your time. A slow visit to one site is more memorable than a quick tour of three.
Bring the right documents
Foreign visitors usually pay a higher ticket price at monuments, and some sites accept online booking. Check the official source for current prices and opening days before you go.
Carry your passport copy or ID if needed, and keep small change or a working digital payment method handy.
Pace the day
Two sites in a day is plenty. Give each at least 90 minutes, add travel time and rest in the middle of the day. Late afternoon light is lovely at all three places.
Wear light clothes, carry water and sunscreen, and plan your return ride before you leave the site, since traffic can build up in the evening.
What to read before you go
A short note on each site before the visit helps you notice more. Many sites have signboards, and official sources list history and opening days. Read a little the night before, then let the place speak for itself.
If you want a guide, ask for an approved one at the entrance and confirm the rate before the tour begins.
Pair each site with a pause
Humayun's Tomb sits near a lively neighbourhood with cafes, and the Qutb area has green spaces nearby. After the Red Fort, a short walk or ride to the old city lanes offers tea or a snack.
Plan a cool drink or a sit-down meal between sites. The day goes better when the visits are separated by real rest, not just a ride.
