A market morning or a design-shop afternoon

Puducherry offers several different shopping trips. Goubert Market is a working market; MG Road has a Sunday market; the French Quarter has small clothing and design shops; Auroville offers products from its own makers. Pick the kind of browse you want rather than treating all four as one continuous walk. Check the current shop address and opening arrangements before travelling.

Goubert Market and the Sunday market

Incredible India identifies Goubert Market with produce, spices and everyday market activity, and the Sunday market on MG Road with clothing, accessories and small goods. These are useful choices when you want a bazaar rather than a curated boutique. Ask before photographing people at work, keep loading routes clear and compare the object itself. A market setting does not establish that an item is handmade or locally produced.

Naushad Ali and Chintz: two fashion leads

A 2024 Condé Nast Traveller report identifies Naushad Ali on Surcouf Street for clothing in fabrics including cotton, linen and silk, and Chintz as a multi-designer store. They offer different starting points: a designer collection or a wider edit. Use the report to find a lead, then confirm the current location and collection. Look at fabric composition, fit and care instructions rather than assuming every piece shares one sustainability claim.

Janaki and Galerie Surcouf: objects as well as clothing

The same independent report describes Janaki as a place to investigate Auroville clothing, ceramics and fragrance products, and Galerie Surcouf for ceramics, books and home objects. Choose one material or use before browsing. Ask who made a ceramic piece, whether it is intended for food use, and how a fragile purchase will be packed. A gallery-like setting does not make every object an antique or an original artwork.

Cluny Embroidery Centre: look closely at the work

Both national tourism information and the independent shopping report identify Cluny Embroidery Centre as a lead for embroidered household linen. This is a different purchase from a printed souvenir cloth. Ask about the fabric, embroidery technique and washing instructions, and inspect the reverse as well as the front. Confirm visiting arrangements before setting out; do not assume production spaces are open for an unannounced tour.

Auroville Visitors Centre: a separate outing

Auroville's own Visitors Centre page lists boutiques including La Boutique d'Auroville, Mirra and Kalki, with products such as clothing, tableware, jewellery, incense and furnishings. This is a practical starting point when you want to compare Auroville-made goods in one area. Keep the journey separate from a short French Quarter walk. A shopping visit is not access to the interior of the Matrimandir; those visitor arrangements are a different question.

Buy for the journey home

For linen, ask about laundering and colour care. For ceramics, agree on protective packing before paying. For oils, cosmetics or food, check the label and the rules that apply to your flight and destination. Keep a receipt that names the item and seller. Old travel reports are shopping leads, not proof of current stock, opening hours or prices.
