Why a wallet at all
A prepaid wallet lets you load money once and pay at many shops by scanning QR codes. For a visitor without an Indian bank account, it can be a way to use the same QR system that locals use. It is optional. Many trips run well on a card and some cash.
Check who can sign up
Providers set their own rules on which passports, countries and visa types they accept. They may also ask for photo identity checks, which take time. Read this section of the provider's page first, because it decides whether the rest matters to you. The National Payments Corporation of India has described UPI One World as a wallet for inbound travellers. Eligibility has changed over time, so check current terms.
Look at the money in and out
Find out how you can load the wallet, whether by card or bank transfer, and in which currency. Check whether there are loading fees, minimum or maximum amounts and an expiry date on the balance. Then find out how to get unused money back. A clear refund route is a good sign.
Look at where it works
A wallet is useful only if shops accept it. Most small merchants who show a UPI QR code are meant to accept payments from compatible wallets, but individual shops can vary. Ask your hotel which places nearby take QR payments and which prefer cash.
Look at support and safety
Check that the app comes from an official store and that there is a clear way to contact support. Be wary of any provider that asks you to pay a fee through a personal account or share a one-time code. Keep your passcode private and review the transaction list each evening.
Compare with the alternatives
A forex card, a regular card and cash each have strengths. Compare the real costs and the convenience, not just the headline. For many visitors a mix is best. Write down the three or four things that matter most to you, such as speed, cost and ease of refund, and compare against those.
Do a test run
Once set up, make one small purchase, such as a tea, to see how it works. Check the confirmation and the balance. If anything looks odd, contact support before relying on it. A small test is far better than a first payment at a busy counter.
Questions worth writing down
Before you sign up, write a short list: Is my passport accepted? How long does verification take? What does it cost to load and to withdraw? What is the daily limit? How do I reach a person if something fails? Having your own list means you compare providers on the same terms instead of on marketing. Keep the answers in a note. If a provider's page does not answer a question, email support and wait for a clear reply before you put money in.
What a good experience looks like
A good wallet feels plain. The sign-up steps make sense, the fees are written clearly, the balance updates quickly and the confirmation of each payment is easy to read. You never feel rushed or pushed into paying for extras. If any step feels confusing or pushy, trust that feeling and consider another option. There is no prize for committing early.
A ZikPe note
Check ZikPe's official product information, eligibility and current terms before relying on it for a trip. Keep another payment method available and confirm that the merchant accepts the method you intend to use.
ZikPe's published fees: distinguish the load from payment
ZikPe's terms, with the fees section effective from 12 October 2026, state a top-up fee of 2.5% of the amount loaded. They state no fee for opening, monthly or inactivity maintenance, or wallet closure. The terms also warn that a card issuer can separately charge for foreign transactions or currency conversion. Read the actual rupee-credit preview before confirming a load. Do not interpret no maintenance fee as no cost of using the service.
Rewards are plan-dependent Zik Coins
The same terms describe eligible outgoing wallet UPI payments earning Zik Coins at Passport 0%, Globe 2% or Infinity 5%, with the applicable plan shown in the app. That is not an unconditional 5% cash return on every transaction. Loads, fees, refunds, failed or reversed transactions do not earn those rewards, and the terms say Zik Coins have no cash value except where the app expressly allows otherwise. Compare the cost and usefulness of a plan before treating rewards as savings.
Ask about the unresolved limits
The public pages checked for this article do not provide a complete country-by-country eligibility list or every wallet and transaction limit. Confirm those details for your account instead of importing another provider's rules. The official visitor guide describes QR payments; that alone is not evidence that every Amazon or Uber checkout flow supports this wallet. A particular online transaction needs its own compatibility check.
