Two weeks before
Check that your passport and visa are in order, since many sign-ups ask for them. Tell your bank you are travelling and ask about foreign fees, daily limits and how to lock a lost card. Decide which payment options you want to use, and read the current terms of each from the provider's own pages.
Cards
Take two cards from different accounts if you can. Keep them in different bags. Check that each works abroad, and note the bank's international phone number. Make sure contactless and PIN features are active. Ask whether a card has a fee for foreign purchases or ATM withdrawals, and how much it is.
Wallets and apps
If you plan to use a wallet for QR payments, download it from the official store and sign up before you leave. Identity checks can take time, and mobile data may be patchy on arrival. Test the login at home, and note how to reach support. Keep screenshots of confirmation emails.
Phone and data
Check how you will get mobile data in India, whether through roaming, an eSIM or a local SIM. Many payment and ride apps need a stable connection and a code sent to your phone. Carry a power bank. A dead phone makes every other plan harder.
A little cash
Bring a small amount of rupees, or plan to get some at the airport or from an ATM soon after landing. Small notes are most useful for tea, snacks, tips and rides. Check the exchange rate and fees before you change money, and keep the receipt.
Save the important details
Keep an offline note with your hotel address and phone number, your bank's international numbers, your insurance policy number and your passport details. Keep a second copy with a trusted person at home. If you lose your phone, that note could be what gets you going again.
On arrival
Do not rush. Pick a safe airport counter or an ATM inside the terminal, get enough for the first day and check your phone is working. Then head to your hotel and settle in. Ask your hotel what is easy to pay by card and what is better in cash nearby.
A simple order of tasks
Start with the slow items: identity checks and anything that needs a document. Then set up cards and alerts. Then download apps and test logins. Last, pack the physical items: cards, a little cash, a power bank and your offline notes. Ticking these off over a week is much calmer than doing them the night before the flight.
Common slips to avoid
Travellers often forget to tell their bank, keep both cards in the same wallet, leave their phone number unlinked to an account or arrive with no small notes. Each is easy to fix at home and annoying to fix abroad. Read your list one more time at the airport, before you board.
Why it pays to be early
Many sign-ups ask for photos, documents and a code sent to your phone. If you try this in an arrivals hall with weak signal, it becomes stressful. Done at home, with good Wi-Fi and time to read, it is easy. Treat it as part of packing, like choosing shoes.
A ZikPe note
Check ZikPe's official product information, eligibility and current terms before relying on it for a trip. Keep another payment method available and confirm that the merchant accepts the method you intend to use.
ZikPe's published starting point: passport and visa
ZikPe's official visitor guide says to download the app and sign up with passport and visa details, without an Indian bank account. Start from the official website's app links rather than an advertisement or a similarly named app. Those published requirements do not establish eligibility for every nationality, age or visa type. Confirm the requirements shown for your own case before relying on the wallet for arrival-day spending.
A published journey is not a timed app test
The official guide outlines signup, international-card top-up and QR payment. This article has not tested the current app screens and does not promise a two-minute activation, instant KYC approval or a particular PIN sequence. Follow the actual in-app checks and do not upload identity documents to a support chat or third-party link simply because it claims to accelerate verification. Keep another payment method until activation and a small payment are confirmed.
Check the top-up preview before loading
The official guide names international Visa and Mastercard for top-up and says the app shows the rupee amount, including fees, before confirmation. Review that amount for the exact card and transaction. A supported network does not guarantee every issuer will authorise a load, and the card issuer may add its own charges. Avoid loading the whole trip budget before you understand the actual wallet limits and how unused money is returned.
